BRAMTOT is a cider apple that came from a French seedling of the mid-1800s, reputedly from the old variety named Martin Fessar; taken to England by the Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club in 1884. The juice is low acid, high-tannin, excellent for cider. The fruit is small, ugly, conic, green, and partially russeted with a dull orange blush. Flesh is firm, cream-colored, quite bitter, very astringent with a very high sugar content. The apple is horrible for fresh eating but an excellent bittersweet for blending in cider. It is not very well known and rarely included in the literature. Steve Wood of Farnham Hill Ciders called it “a lovely little apple with nice juice, interesting, aggressively tannic.” The trees are strongly biennial in bearing fruit. |
