 Vintage Virginia Apples

...from the rich orchard heritage of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains

Calville Rouge D'Automne

CALVILLE ROUGE D'AUTOMNE, or Autumn Red Calville, is also known as Strawberry, or Switzerland, Autumn Calville, Violette, Red Blandon, and French and German translations of the name. It was first recorded in 1670, and likely came from Auvergne, France. Large in size, the shape is conic, convex to straight, and ribbed at the eye and on the body. The yellow skin is flushed pale to deep-red, and the tender, course-grained flesh is white-tinged red under the skin, with a subacid, aromatic flavor. This dessert apple ripens in September.
