WINCHESTER is a cross between York Imperial and Lowry, a dessert variety released by the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station. The fruit ripens in mid-September and is covered with a 60 to 90% orange red blush over a green background. The fruit averages 3 to 3.5 inches in diameter and weigh about half-a-pound each. The shape is slightly conic and round to slightly angular. The flesh is white, crisp, juicy, and the flavor is tart to subacid. The Fruit becomes greasy as it matures. The trees are very vigorous, heavy annual croppers, and preharvest fruit drop is often severe. |
