...from the rich orchard heritage of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains Fruit Culture at Rural Ridge Orchard |
|
Bud Shelton leads a tour during a workshop at Rural Ridge Orchard. |
Fruit, as no other crop or food, has commanded the imagination of humankind for centuries. In addition to its nutritional contributions, it has provided more pleasures for the table than perhaps any other food. The attraction of producing superior fruit or growing one's own fruit has appealed to enthusiasts for generations. Yet as wonderful as fruit is, it is not the easiest crop to grow, and its cultivation is an art as well as a science.
Bill Shelton sells Vintage Virginia Apples at the Farmer's Market in Charlottesville, VA. Those interested in growing fruit today face numerous challenges -- whether they wish to do so for market or for home use. Not the least of these challenges is finding practical information in an accessible format. Vintage Virginia Apples LLC is a small business that has developed from interest in first growing apples for personal use, and as the orchard expanded, in sharing the results of this endeavor. The seminars and workshops we offer are aimed at sharing the expertise that has helped us here by offering a forum for experts in the practical aspects of fruit production. For those who can't attend our workshops, this section of the Web site will offer topics in fruit culture to prospective commercial and serious home orchardists, as well as to practicing orchardists who hope to fine tune their operations. Watch this space for links to articles covering topics such as site selection, soils, water and drainage; variety selection; issues in choosing nursery stock; rootstock selection, bench grafting techniques; pruning; pest management; basic cultural management, and devising a business plan. Any of you who would like to publish an article on our Web site to share with others, contact us via E-mail at the link below, and we will be happy to consider your article for publication. |
