DAWN is a very good quality dessert pear, ripening about 10 days after Bartlett. The fruit is slightly smaller than Bartlett, is aromatic, spicy and juicy, and is almost free of grit cells. It originated in Beltsville, Maryland, by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It was ntroduced for trial in 1960. The frui ripens for prime eating in 12 to 14 days when held at 70-degrees F. It ripens about 14 days earlier than Bartlett. The tree is upright, moderately vigorous, bears mainly on short terminals, and is not highly resistant to fire blight (probably no more so than Bartlett). Its flowers contain moderate quantities of pollen. This variety is recommended for trial in areas where Bartlett can be grown as a high-quality variety ripening 2 weeks before Bartlett.
