Jefferson Peach

jefferson

JEFFERSON is a hybrid of 'J.H. Hale' and 'Vibrant', released in 1960 by the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station. The variety was developed in Virginia and named after Thomas Jefferson, who planted 38 different peach varieties at his orchard at Monticello. Jefferson is a freestone peach. The skin is bright yellow with a red blush, and the flesh is yellow to orange. The tree is a dependable producer and has showy blooms in the spring. The flesh is fairly firm and the flavor is good. Noted for exceptional color, attractive appearance, above average size, firmness, desirable texture, flavor and quality. The tree is moderately vigorous. Blossom buds are moderately resistant to mid-winter cold; have shown outstanding hardiness to blossoming season frosts. Fruit seems to be much less susceptible to brown rot than J.H. Hale. Requires 850 chilling hours. Harvest begins Aug. 3 to Aug. 14.
