Lemon Cling Peach

LEMON CLING is also known as the Carolina Canada, Kennedy Carolina, Lemon, or Large Yellow Pineapple peach. Thomas Jefferson was sent cuttings of the “Carolina Canada” peach by Timothy Matlack, who said, “When fully ripe, [it is] the most juicy and highest flavoured of all the clingstone peaches. It retains more of the peach flavour in brandy than any other.” This was the “Lemon peach” Jefferson received from Walter Coles in 1816. Downing praised Lemon Cling as “one of the largest, and most beautiful of all the yellow fleshed clings.” Named for its very large and lemon-shaped fruit, Lemon Cling was commonly sold in American nurseries from 1790 until the first half of the 20th century.
