OLD MIXON FREE is a variant of Oldmixon Cling. In 1807, Timothy Matlack sent Thomas Jefferson cuttings of the Oldmixon Cling and Oldmixon Free peach. Oldmixon Free originated early in the 19th century from a seedling of the Cling, and by 1811, it was sold by the Landreth nursery of Philadelphia. Coxe described it as a “beautiful large peach” in 1817. The juice of the Oldmixon peaches was very sweet. This white flesh freestone ripens in September. Uniformly large, white covered with bright red; one of the best and most reliable. Valuable for orchard purposes for market; buds are hardy; freestone. |
