RED HAVEN is the standard and most popular peach variety in the industry. The fruit quality is good, although fruit size may be small if it is not properly thinned. The fruit has above-average quality for freezing but below-average quality for canning. Medium, nearly fuzzless fruit, bright all-over red. Firm, yellow flesh becomes freestone as it ripens. It has a tendency to stick to the pit if not fully mature. Excellent for dessert, canning and freezing. Vigorous strong growing, self-fertile tree bears young. Tolerates handling well; flesh resists browning. Abundant fruit set; requires early through thinning. Tolerant to leaf spot. Susceptible to leaf curl, brown rot, Oriental fruit moth and twig borer. Dislikes warm winters. Best for the lower Midwest. Ripens 28-31 days before Elberta. 800-950 hours chilling. Hardy in Zones 5-8. From Michigan in 1940. | |
