...from the rich orchard heritage of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains Seckel Pear |
|
|
SECKEL is a tiny, gourmet pear, typically only about 1.5 inches in diameter. The flavor is very sweet, and it is often referred to as a "sugar pear." It is aromatic, and the fruit is lightly russetted, with a red blush. It is a grower-friendly, semi-dwarf tree that is resistant to fireblight. This variety was introduced about 1800. The fruit has a dull green cast and often has red highlights. Seckel pears are the variety most often found in home orchards. The pears are ripe when they take on a yellow hue and yield to gentle pressure at the stem end. It has a sweet, spicy flesh, which makes it excellent for cooking or canning. The texture of Seckels is somewhat grainy. It ripens in the last of September and is fireblight resistant. Needs a pollenizer.
