Pears at Rural Ridge
The orchardist who grows pears in the United States faces a significant challenge. Fireblight is native to North America; and the European pears, so prized by fruit connoiseurs, are very vulnerable to it. There are varieties that are less susceptible, and we currently have some two dozen varieties that we believe are promising.
To date, our most successful cultivar is the Burford pear, and we have grafted that variety and several others.
